This "Era Grader" is akin to two similar ones used to make the Aberdeen-Springfield Canal's Big Fill and Lowline Canal. It's a combination plow—to loosen the soil—scraper, to gather the soil, and conveyor to put the loose to the side—or, as in this picture, into a dump wagon. The local canal company had eight horses and four mules attached to each of its Era Graders, and they moved somewhere between one and two hundred thousand yards of earth.
